As we look forward to the start of a new year, we consider how much a year can mean when comparing one watch to its predecessors.
Today, we’ll take a look at the IWC Mark series.
The IWC Mark Replica Watches series is to flying what the Rolex Submariner is to diving. The Mark 11 from 1948 inspired the stark minimalism of this three-hand watch. Predecessor models were introduced by IWC in 1936 and 1945, and their small seconds displays and additional dial details distinguished them from the later classics. Simplicity was the order of the day when the Mark 11 was introduced. The luminous hands on the Mark 11’s dial were designed in two different styles, and they displayed the time on the clearly marked hour and minute tracks with luminous indexes at 3, 9, and 12 o’clock. To avoid distracting reflections, the 36-mm steel case was completely brushed. The basic design codes of the Mark 11 were followed by the Replica Watches Mark XII of 1994. The case was 36 mm in diameter, as before. However, the “12” in the model name was changed to Roman numerals, the numerals on the dial were changed to a different font, and a date display was added. In addition to the brand name, the new version featured the model name and the word “Automatic” on the dial. This would continue on subsequent models, despite the fact that it distorts the dial’s original, extremely clear layout.
In the year 2000, IWC Replica Watches arrived.
The date moved closer to the center of the dial as the case grew from 36 mm to 38 mm. The indexes and hour markers were thickened to compensate for the larger case size, giving the dial the same proportions as the Mark XII dial. The IWC Fake Watches were changed in a significant way: the case grew by only 1 mm, but the shape of the hands was changed to a broad sword shape, which is used on many pilots’ watches for legibility reasons.
This change gave the new model a more historical appearance, but it also gave it a look similar to vintage pilots’ watches made by other companies. Another change was the return to the slimmer font seen on the dial of the original IWC Replica Mark 11. Except for the 4, all of the numerals appeared to be identical to those on the 1948 version. The case grew 2 mm in size on the way to the current Mark XVII, now measuring 41 mm across, while the case shape and dial appearance remained largely unchanged. Unfortunately, IWC Fake Watches abandoned the clean functionality of its earlier models with the addition of the elongated date window with its red arrow pointer. The new display is a design element that adds a splash of color to the dial with the red triangle, but it adds little else to the well-known model series.
