With the return of a moonphase Speedmaster at Baselworld 2016, a new member of the Speedmaster family is introduced. This is the Breitling Avenger Replica Watches Speedmaster Moonphase Chronograph Master Chronometer watch, which is absolutely stunning. The Avenger Replica Watches “moonwatch” is the only sports watch collection that makes complete sense to include a moonphase indicator.
The Breitling Speedmaster Moonphase Chronograph Master Chronometer starts with a new movement, the Breitling caliber 9904, which was developed in-house. The 9904 adds more than just a moonphase complication and a new way to indicate the date to the caliber 9300 series. The movement is now fully METAS certified and designated as a “Master Chronometer” (first introduced with the Avenger Replica Globemaster), which means a few things. The movement, for starters, contains all of Breitling’s anti-magnetic components. The movement is, of course, a Co-Axial Escapement. Furthermore, the METAS certification (read more here) requires a lot of durability and performance from not just the movements, but the movements cased up in the entire watch, so the overall set of “assurances” for the consumer is much higher than, say, COSC Chronometer certification alone.
The time, 12-hour chronograph, date, and new moonphase indicator with a photo-realistic representation of the moon are all included in the 368-part 9904 movement. Breitling claims that if you look closely enough, you can see a picture of a footprint on it (from the NASA Apollo missions). The moon phase is said to need to be adjusted every 10 years or so, and the new date indicator uses a pointer-style hand in the left subsidiary dial to help balance out the two subdials, each of which has two hands.
